The Best Snacks for Busy Nurses

When you’re on your shift, you usually don’t have time to sit down for a full meal. It’s tempting to reach for a sugary snack to keep your energy levels high, but the sugar crash afterward can slow you down even more. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of snacks that are perfect for any nursing shift!

Protein bars

These bars will give you long-lasting energy while on your shift. They’re easy to take on the go, and the protein provides that “full” feeling that you need when you’re feeling hungry. Make sure you find your favorite type of protein bars — some are more palatable than others!

Nuts

These snacks are also high in protein, which will keep you from feeling that hungry gnawing sensation in your stomach while you’re on your shift. Almonds, pistachios, and walnuts are all great sources of nutrients, and give you the snack sensation by popping one in your mouth whenever you need it.

Dried Fruit

Have you ever brought fruit to your shift, intending to eat it, but in a moment of weakness made a dash to the vending machine? Then a few days later, seen that fruit going bad in the kitchen, and felt a wave of guilt wash over you? With dried fruits, this is a problem of the past. Dried fruit can stay fresh at room temperature for weeks, compared to the mere days it takes an apple or a banana to go bad. They’re also nutritious and can provide a great boost when you’re feeling your energy waning.

Greek Yogurt

This snack is also high in protein, and can be conveniently mixed with other snacks for variety! Throw in some fresh fruit or granola to shake up this snack, and try the many flavors that it can be found in. It also strengthens your bones and your probiotic make-up, leading to a healthier body all around.

Snacks for Night Shift Nurses

While all of the snacks above are a great choice for any working nurse, the night shift comes with its own set of challenges. We’ve included a couple snacks for nurses who need to keep their energy levels high throughout the night below:

Dark Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans

This delicacy, which can be found at grocery stores, is great for giving you a bit of caffeine-aided energy while working the night shift. They’re also tasty, and are a lot more enjoyable than gulping down that third cup of cold coffee. The chocolate will also release dopamine, which increases your energy levels.

Coffee Bar

Along with protein bars, there are now coffee bars. These snacks are made with real coffee, and will give you the energy you need during the night shift. They also contain many of the nutrients that protein bars do, but with the added benefit of keeping you alert when your energy starts to dip.

Snacks for Road-Tripping Nurses

One of the unique parts of being a travel nurse is the time you spend in the car getting to and from your travel nursing assignments. If you’ve taken an assignment across the country and will be spending a lot of time in the car, we’ve compiled some of the best snacks to take along the way.

Grapes

Grapes are easy to snack on and contain plenty of nutrients. They also hydrate you with their high water content, which will prevent you from feeling fatigued during your trip (without necessitating bathroom breaks every thirty minutes).

Fruit Chips

Similar to the dried fruit we mentioned above, fruit chips will give you the nutrients you need while also being a joy to snack on. They give the satisfying crunch that you want during a road trip, without the high sodium and empty carbs of potato chips.

Seltzer Water

While not technically a snack, this is a great replacement to the soda that many of us reach for when stopping at a gas station. This will help wash down your snacks and quench your thirst from some salty, or sweet, snacks that you’ll find at gas stations.

We hope this list has helped you find a replacement for some of the more unhealthy snacks travel nurses often find themselves eating at work, at night, or on the way to your next assignment — and if you’re looking for that next travel nursing assignment, click below to check out our open jobs!
