Rhode Island Travel Nursing: Experience New England

A Rhode Island travel nursing job has so much to offer RNs looking to experience quintessential New England. As America’s smallest state, every destination within Rhode Island is an easy day trip. Of course, you may need to do some prioritizing to make the most out of a 13-week assignment, so we’ve put together some of the top ways to experience the very best of Rhode Island.

1. Hop Aboard a Pontoon Boat with the Providence River Boat Company

Learn all about the capital and largest city of Rhode Island, including historical, architectural and nautical points of interest while taking in picturesque scenery by joining the Providence River Boat Company tour. These pontoon boat tours offer lots of great photo-ops, with the sunset excursions particularly unforgettable. By booking a month in advance for the WaterFire nights, you’ll have the best seat in the house for watching the internationally-renowned art installation. On these evenings, downtown Providence is transformed by 100 bonfires that float just above the surface of the Providence and Moshassuck rivers.

2. Stroll Back in Time on Benefit Street in Providence

History buffs will find lots to discover along Benefit Street, a one-mile-long cobbled road that’s home to the one of the nation’s highest concentrations of Colonial buildings, including the Nightingale-Brown House, once the residence of one of the Brown University founders. Explore it independently or join a walking tour offered by the Rhode Island Historical Society. Either way, it’s like taking a fascinating stroll back in time.

3. Visit the Roger Williams Park Zoo

Providence’s zoo was founded back in 1872, making it one of the oldest zoos in the U.S. It features over 100 species of animals, from Masai giraffes and red pandas to Komodo dragons.

4. Experience the Opulence of the Newport Mansions

Don’t miss the chance to tour the Newport mansions while you’re in Rhode Island as a travel nurse. The “City by the Sea” is world famous for its opulent homes that are remnants of the ultra-luxurious lifestyles of the country’s wealthiest industrialists around in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

5. Soak up the Sun and the Sand from Block Island Beaches

Situated just over 10 miles off the southern coast of the state, Block Island is accessed by ferry and is a fabulous place to enjoy the beach and gorgeous ocean views. Go kayaking, sailing, snorkeling, fishing, horseback riding, bird-watching, or hiking on your days away from the hospital.

6. Shop ‘Til You Drop in Warwick

Warwick is the place to go for shopping, known as “The Retail Capital of Rhode Island,” with two large malls and lots of great shops along Route 2. Warwick is a favorite destination among travel nurses!

7. Explore Beautiful Jamestown

Jamestown is a small town on Conanicut Island that can be reached by bridge from the mainland. This coastal treasure offers everything from an active lighthouse and haunting abandoned military forts to scenic hiking trails.
