Why North Carolina Should Be on Your Travel Nursing Shortlist

Nearly every travel nurse has a list of destinations they’d like to cross off their bucket list—perhaps California for its golden sands and giant redwoods, Montana for adventures in the Northern Rocky Mountains, or New York City for its many cultural attractions.

What about a destination that offers a little of all the above? A travel nursing assignment in North Carolina provides just that and much more. Here are five reasons NC should be on your travel nursing shortlist.

1. BEACHES AND WILD HORSES IN THE OUTER BANKS

The Outer Banks, a narrow strip of land separating Pamlico Sound from the open waters of the Atlantic, hosts some of America’s most unspoiled silken shores along with picturesque lighthouses and the opportunity to enjoy all sorts of outdoor adventures, like paddle boarding, kayaking, wakeboarding, and surfing.

This beautiful region is also home to groups of wild horses that roam around the towns of Corolla, Shackleford Banks, Ocracoke, and Beaufort as descendants of horses brought here in the 16th century by Spanish explorers. Perhaps they were the victims of shipwrecks, though no one is quite sure. There is no doubt, however, that seeing these animals running free is something that should be on every traveler’s bucket list.

2. RACING THRILLS, NFL, AND MORE IN CHARLOTTE

There are plenty of ways to indulge your passion for sports while burning off job stress in Charlotte. Charlotte Motor Speedway just northeast of downtown hosts NASCAR races held in May and October, bringing out the largest and loudest crowds. But that’s not the only game in town—the NFL’s Carolina Panthers play home games in Uptown at Bank of America Stadium and have a very loyal following thanks to the team’s numerous playoff appearances, while the NBA’s Hornets play at Spectrum Center, right in downtown Charlotte.

3. AN AMERICAN CASTLE AND FANTASTIC SHOPPING IN ASHEVILLE

While not technically a “castle,” Biltmore Estate is often referred to as the nation’s largest privately-owned home. The former mansion of George Washington Vanderbilt was built in French-chateau style and includes 250 rooms. It’s so large that it has its own bowling alley, a library with 10,000 books, an indoor pool, a winery, and, of course, its famous manicured gardens.

Asheville’s picturesque streets are a shopper’s delight, lined with more than 200 locally-owned stores, boutiques, and galleries. Overnights in Asheville are always fun with plenty to do after dark; the small city has a wide range of live music venues, nightclubs, taprooms, and wine bars to sample.

4. STROLLING THROUGH BEAUTIFUL SARAH P. DUKE GARDENS IN DURHAM

Duke University in Durham offers a wonderful place to enjoy quiet contemplation and a stroll through some 55 acres of landscaped gardens, with over five miles of pathways that meander through the lush greenery and colorful flowers.

5. COOLING OFF ON A NATURAL ROCK SLIDE IN THE PISGAH NATIONAL FOREST

When temperatures are sizzling hot, you can slip down the 60-foot-tall natural rock water slide known as Sliding Rock in the Pisgah National Forest. It’s one of best ways to cool off and have a good time in the summer, though you’ll find countless sparkling lakes for swimming and other activities throughout the state.
