HOW DO I GET MY PENNSYLVANIA

NURSING LICENSE?

If a travel nurse wants to obtain their Pennsylvania nursing license, they must follow these steps:

  • Create an account at pals.pa.gov. Select the Nursing Board to apply and then follow the instructions to complete the application, upload the necessary documents and pay the required fees.
  • Verification of every state where you hold a license or authority to practice is required. If the state(s) participate in the NURSYS system, you can complete the request on the NURSYS site, designating Pennsylvania as the receipt of verification. If the state(s) do not participate in NURSYS, you must contact their boards of nursing for further instructions, including fees, if any. You will need to send them the Verification of License form and request that they complete and submit the form to the Pennsylvania Board of Nursing at 2601 N. 3rd St, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
  • Criminal background checks are required for all applicants. A recent Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) from the state police or other law enforcement agency for every state in which you have lived, worked or completed professional training for the past 10 years must be submitted. All reports must be dated within 90 days of the date you submit your application. If you are an out-of-state applicant, you can provide both a state CHRC from the state in which you currently reside and your FBI Identity History Summary Check. The CHRC request for in-state applicants will automatically be submitted to the Pennsylvania State Police upon submission of the application.

After submitting the above, you will be qualified for a temporary license, however you will need to complete the steps below before your temporary license expires to receive a permanent license.

  • Request your official transcripts from the nursing school that qualified you for your original RN license. Ask the school to send them directly to the Pennsylvania Board of Nursing at 2601 N. 3rd St, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
  • You must complete at least three hours of Pennsylvania Department of Human Services-approved continuing education in child abuse recognition and reporting as a condition of licensure. After completing the required course, the approved provider will electronically submit your name and date of attendance to the board.
