10 Reasons California is a Travel Nurse Dream Destination

Jan 9, 2018

Sunny California is a dream destination for many travelers, with attractions like golden beaches, Hollywood, soaring mountains, desert landscapes, and grapevine-covered hills drawing visitors daily. If a California travel nursing job is on your radar, here are just a few of the reasons you should nail down an assignment in the Golden State soon.

1. Home to the Most Beautiful Beach in the Nation

With so many endless stretches of gorgeous sands, it’s not that surprising that California is home to a beach that’s frequently voted as the finest in the entire country: Coronado Beach. A travel nursing assignment in San Diego means you’ll be just minutes from those soft, powdery sands that glisten under the ever-present sunshine.

2. Balboa Park

San Diego is home to the 1,200-acre Balboa Park, which offers a wealth of attractions away from the sand, including the world-renowned San Diego Zoo, over a dozen museums, the romantic Marston House Garden, one of the most esteemed regional theaters in the country, miles of hiking and biking trails, a golf complex, tennis club, and more.

3. Filming Locations

If you’re a fan of television and the movies, you’ll have the chance to explore a myriad of filming locations, especially around Los Angeles (though hundreds of famous scenes have been shot all over the state). Head to Grand Park in L.A. to see where Julia Roberts and Richard Gere read Shakespeare under a tree in Pretty Woman, or to the iconic Beverly Hills—a fabulous place for people-watching and mingling with the stars.

4. Amusements at Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier has been an iconic Los Angeles-area landmark for more than a century. It’s home to an amusement park that boasts a historic 1922 carousel, as well as the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel. Take a spin around the Pacific Wheel and you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking coastline vistas 130 feet above the pier.

5. San Jose Flea Market

While shopping in places like Beverly Hills comes with a high price tag, you’ll find plenty of places for bargains in California, too, like the San Jose Flea Market. It’s home to mile after mile of vendors selling a wide array of treasures ranging from collectible comics and antiques, to jewelry, fashions, and organic produce.

6. Winchester Mystery House

This world-famous Victorian mansion is one of the most fascinating homes you’ll ever step into. The massive construction project was started by Sarah Winchester, the wealthy widow of William Winchester in 1884, and continued for nearly four decades until she died in 1922. The 160-room mansion includes so many mysterious oddities that it became known as the Winchester Mystery House. The home’s fascinating design and rumors of Sarah’s ghost draw visitors from across the globe.

7. Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge, possibly the state’s most iconic landmark, will be right at your doorstep with a San Francisco travel nurse assignment. The bridge makes for more than just a great picture; you can hop on a bike and ride or walk the 1.7-mile span, with sidewalks open during the day to both bicyclists and pedestrians.

8. Muir Woods

Just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, you’ll enter a place that feels like it’s world’s away. Muir Woods has been compared to walking into a magnificent church cathedral; it’s home to some of the country’s oldest and tallest trees, some of which are more than 1,000 years old.

9. Old Sacramento

California’s state capital is ideal for history buffs, home to Old Sacramento, the city’s historic district which runs along the waterfront. This historical national landmark hosts a number of interesting museums in which to learn about Sacramento’s rich history, including an automobile museum with vehicles that date back to 1885. The area also offers wagon and carriage rides year-round.

10.  Nine National Parks

California is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts. On your off days outside the hospital, visit one of nine U.S. National Parks in the Golden State. Whether hiking the iconic Half Dome in Yosemite National Park or kayaking among the Channel Islands, you’ll never be far away from breathtaking views and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
